Check the alt text on a page

Alt text is the only image description Google can read, and the only one a screen reader has. Here's what each image on your page actually says.

No API. Reads the page directly.

How it works

  1. Finds every image in the HTML and pulls out its alt attribute, file name and size hints.
  2. Flags missing text, file names used as alt, placeholder words, overlong descriptions and the same text repeated across images.
  3. Leaves empty alt alone in the pass column, because decorative images should have it.

Where it stops

  • Only images in the HTML.
  • Ignores CSS backgrounds and lazy-loaded images.

Common questions

Is empty alt text ever correct?

Yes. Decorative images should have alt="" so a screen reader skips them entirely. We mark those for review rather than as errors.

How long should alt text be?

One sentence, usually under 125 characters. If an image needs more than that, the explanation probably belongs in the copy around it.

Should I put keywords in alt text?

Only when they describe what's in the picture. Stuffed alt text reads badly to real people and looks like spam to Google.
