Somewhere around 50 to 60 characters. Pixels decide, not letters.
Aim for 140 to 160 characters.
Used for the URL line above the title.
Runs locally in your browser.

How it works

  1. Measures the rendered width in the browser, because a 58 character title of wide letters can still get cut.
  2. Shows desktop and mobile side by side, with the cut marked.
  3. Tells you when a title is too short to use the space you've been given.

Where it stops

  • Pixel widths are close, not exact.
  • Can't predict when Google rewrites your snippet.

Common questions

How long should a title tag be?

Around 50 to 60 characters, but width matters more than count. A title of 58 narrow characters can fit while a 60 character one gets cut. The pixel measurement above is the number to trust.

Does Google always use my meta description?

No. It rewrites descriptions for a lot of queries, often pulling a sentence out of the page instead. A good description still decides the click when Google does use it.

Is this Google's actual preview?

No. It's an approximation built on Arial metrics and the pixel limits Google has published. Real results vary by device and query.
